Mokumé Gané by James Binnion
Mokumé Gané (pronounced mo-KOO-may GAH-nay) is an ancient Japanese metal lamination process. Translated, the words mean "wood eye metal", referred to here as wood-grain metal. Mokume Gane is a technically difficult and time consuming process invented in Japan in the 17th Century. Denbei Shoami, a master metalsmith, developed it to use for the adornment of samurai swords. The process was almost forgotten until being re-explored in the 1970s by American metalsmiths. Now it is one of the most popular styles we feature.
